look at the "washington post" poll. i think you brought this up earlier in the show who to blame if this doesn't work out. the congressional gop gets 53% as opposed to the president. >> it's almost 2-1. >> you know, give us a sense as to why, first of all, it goes there. i think we know. >> look at our primary process. >> okay. so look at the last year. look at the last two years. and the president has made this attempt on taxes. isn't that fair? >> sure that's where he starts. you grew up with parents, you have a starting point. and for somebody -- >> putting the house up for sale. but what i think is different for the president on this one is that he feels he's just won an election on this and that he will give anything but this. and that's going to make it tough. from '73 to '91. >> richard nixon, though, won 49 states the year before. richard nixon has a large mandate i had better blindly follow. that's what some democrats forgot, that if you're a congressman or a congresswoman and you won an election with 75% of yo

that's what washington feeds on. fair enough, it's just what they do. >> does this mean that john boehner has the confidence of the republican caucus, that he can go into a negotiating room with the president and not worry about getting, you know, having to pull 12 knifes out of his back after he comes back with a proposal? >> i think the whole thing of political posturing is a big issue n. talking with him and others, there hasn't been much done the last three weeks. people want to think it's behind the scenes but there hasn't been much done. i'm glad they have the phone call. we need to get out of the business of political posturing and get it done and i think the president has to lead. i think boehner, a lot of us want a big deal. we're willing to put everything on the table. >> including new revenue? >> including new revenue. when we talk about they're going to cut, add revenue, cut expenses, we're running $1.3 trillion a year. we're going bankrupt if we don't figure out how to do this in a big way, and i think b

it's the washington way. there's a lot of dancing around the edges, a lot of noise and sabre rattling. the president put on out a plan. his initial salvo was a smack in the face, a reality check to the republicans saying i won the election, and now deal with this. but boehner, to his credit, came back and said, you know, this is ridiculous, and this is not the way we're going to negotiate. and you've got others like grover and certainly lindsey graham and other members out there who have been very strong at first saying no, we're not going over the cliff, this is crazy. others saying you want to go over the cliff, we'll go over the cliff but republicans should be careful here because if you fall into that trap and take that bait, and the president calls your bluff on it, then all of a sudden, this comes to your lap, not the president. because geithner and others are setting this argument up very nicely. look, we've put this wonderful plan out here. everybody in the country, the polls say top 2%, you know, sho
